June 2023 ~ La Traviata
LA TRAVIATTA 8.5x14 FINAL.jpg

Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata", written in 1853, tells the story of a Parisian courtesan named Violetta Valéry and her tragic love affair with a young nobleman named Alfredo Germont.

June 2022 -  The Merry Widow
THE MERRY WIDOW 8.5x14.jpg

If operetta is the musical comedy of the opera world, then The Merry Widow is its biggest all-time smash hit. Premiered in 1905 at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien, Hungarian-born Franz Lehár’s irresistible romantic romp was promptly adapted for the London stage where it ran for a record-setting 778 performances.

We have a wonderful cast of singers, most of them with Nova Scotia connections.  Returning home to perform her first ‘Merry Widow’ is Nova Scotian soprano Meghan Jamieson in the title role of Hanna Glawari.  Along with Meghan we welcome back Justin Welsh the brilliant young Toronto-based baritone, last seen with us as Marcello in La bohème as were soprano Maureen Batt and baritone MarKo Hubert.  Tenor Patrick Simms returns after joining us in our last summer opera in 2019 as well as Nova Scotia born tenor Colin Frotten.  The MCO chorus completes the ensemble.

Music director Tara Scott will accompany the entire performance at the piano.
